COCAGNE (GNB) – As part of New Brunswick Day celebrations, the names of the 2014 recipients of the Order of New Brunswick were announced today in Cocagne.

“Members of the Order of New Brunswick represent the best of our province," said Premier David Alward. “These individuals are being recognized for having made outstanding contributions to the social, cultural or economic progress of our province. The drive, perseverance and hard work of these individuals has helped to make life better in our communities.”

The recipients are:

  • Roger Augustine, of Eel Ground First Nation, for his efforts in improving the well-being of First Nations communities as well as strengthening the relationships between native and non-native communities;
  • Wayne Curtis, from Fredericton, for his numerous literary contributions, all of which are about New Brunswick, and for his commitment and dedication to Atlantic salmon conservation;
  • Lorraine Diotte, from Dalhousie, for her 50 plus years as a teacher, for her volunteering and involvement in various humanitarian and Acadian causes and, for her many artistic contributions;
  • Roxanne Fairweather, from Saint John, for her strong contribution to the business landscape in the province, for her work to advance research and innovation, and for her efforts in forging partnerships in the community to offer programs to increase literacy;
  • Ivan Hicks, from Moncton, for his musical contribution which is integral to New Brunswick’s culture, for his community volunteer efforts, and his contribution to post-secondary educational institutions;
  • Himanshu Kumar Mukherjee, from Fredericton, for his outstanding advances in Public Health Services and Nursing Home Services in New Brunswick, for his international volunteering efforts and, for his efforts in welcoming immigrants from his country of birth, India;
  • Guy A. Richard, from Bouctouche, for his contribution and advances to the development of campus research at the Université de Moncton and, for his exceptional judicial contributions to the province;
  • Cheryl Robertson, from Rothesay, for her extensive community involvement and for her contribution to the New Brunswick Community College both on the board of directors and as past principal;
  • Claude Snow, from Caraquet, for his work to advance social justice causes, including his efforts in raising awareness for, and defending society’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged people; and
  • Roch Voisine, from Edmunston, for his contribution to the music industry that represents New Brunswick on a provincial, national and international level.

The Order of New Brunswick was established in 2000 to recognize individuals who have demonstrated a high level of excellence and achievement in their particular field. Since 2002 more than 120 accomplished individuals have been inducted for their dedication and service to the province, its people and communities.

“On behalf of all New Brunswickers, I congratulate this year’s recipients and thank them for their passion and dedication to our province,” said Alward.

A ceremony to present this year's recipients with their awards will be held later in the fall.
