FREDERICTON (GNB) – Strengthening the regional economy, creating jobs and addressing the unique needs of Atlantic Canadians will be the highlights of discussions when the Atlantic premiers and members of the federal cabinet representing Atlantic Canada meet in Fredericton tomorrow.

“Our goal is to have an unprecedented level of co-operation in Atlantic Canada,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “We face many of the same challenges but also have many of the same economic opportunities.”

Gallant will be joined by Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Dwight Ball, Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil and Prince Edward Island Premier Wade MacLauchlan. Federal government representatives will include Government House Leader Dominic LeBlanc, Treasury Board President Scott Brison, Public Services and Procurement Minister Judy Foote, Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lawrence MacAulay and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains, who is also minister for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

Discussions will focus on how both levels of government can work together to address demographic challenges, foster economic growth and advance job creation.  

“By working with the other provincial governments in Atlantic Canada and with the federal government, we will be able to grow the economy, invest in education and improve health care delivery,” said Gallant.

“We will discuss how governments can collaborate to grow the region’s population, enhance international trade, continue to address climate change and support health care and services for seniors,” said Government House Leader Dominic LeBlanc.
