BEIRUT, Lebanon (CNB) - Two-time Olympian Joël Bourgeois has been named the official Team Canada - New Brunswick flag-bearer for the opening ceremonies of the 2009 Games of La Francophonie in Beirut, Lebanon.

Bourgeois, a 3000-metre steeplechase runner from Grand Digue, has excelled internationally for many years. This will be his third participation in the Games of La Francophonie. He has also represented Canada at the Atlanta and Sydney Olympics, and in 2009 he participated in the World Cross Country Championships. He won gold at the 1999 Pan American Games.

"Joël has certainly proven that he is an exceptional athlete," said Team Canada - New Brunswick chef de mission Allen Bard. "He has proudly represented our province and country at the Olympic Games and numerous international competitions. He is a model for other athletes from our province due to his determination and his commitment to his sport. We are excited to have him as Team Canada - New Brunswick flag-bearer."
