MONCTON (GNB) – The provincial government has joined the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario in signing a memorandum of understanding to allow for greater interprovincial post-secondary student mobility and credit transfers.

The agreement was signed today between respective provincial councils on articulations and transfer.

“Improving the recognition of credentials transferable from other provinces enables greater student mobility and helps attract and retain the educated, skilled workers needed to move New Brunswick forward,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Francine Landry.

Effective and efficient credit transfer systems allow students to take advantage of a range of opportunities while simplifying administrative processes. Through the agreement, the four councils aim to further develop the systems within their respective jurisdictions as well as provide the necessary leadership for future pan-Canadian partnerships to expand opportunities for students.

“Our government is committed to improving accessibility to post-secondary education,” said Landry. “That means ensuring we have the tools and the systems in place to assist students not only at the beginning of their studies, but throughout their educational journey in order to create New Brunswick’s most job-ready generation.”

Credit transfers play a significant role in the provincial post-secondary sector, as signaled by the recent commitment of Canada’s college and university presidents to develop a framework for collaboration on student mobility.

In New Brunswick, the New Brunswick Council on Articulations and Transfer serves as the body through which stakeholders work co-operatively for the benefit of learners to ensure smooth inter-institutional transitions and effective transferability of courses and programs.
