FREDERICTON (GNB) – Youth are invited to apply to be matched with an employer through the new Youth Employment Fund. The fund will help 1,500 young New Brunswickers each year obtain work experience and training.

Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Francine Landry officially opened the application process today to interested youth and employers.

“The fund is a critical part of the government’s plan to move New Brunswick forward and create the province’s most job-ready generation by helping young people find jobs and gain valuable work experience,” Landry said.

The program will offer unemployed youth aged 18-29 with an opportunity for a six-month placement with an employer that includes workplace experience and employment with the option of up to two months of training within the placement.

Employment counselors will help match young workers with employers and training opportunities. While the placements will be subsidized by the province, employers may provide a top-up. In addition, up to $1,000 will be available for participants to cover costs associated with the job placement such as training, tools, special clothing or equipment.

Applications from eligible young people, and from employers interested in providing a work placement, are now available. Placements will begin in April.

“Today’s announcement is an example of an authentic shift in the way youth can access support to gain skills that lead to permanent employment here at home,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “We are committed to taking steps to close the workforce gaps, and to building a skilled workforce - one that will enable businesses to effectively establish, operate and grow in our province.”
