FREDERICTON (GNB) – With a new academic year beginning, Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Francine Landry today highlighted the provincial government’s efforts toward making post-secondary education more accessible and affordable.

“A focus on post-secondary education is crucial to meeting our goals of creating the most job-ready generation,” said Landry. “We have eliminated the parental and spousal contribution portion of the New Brunswick Student Loan needs assessment, and have introduced a tuition freeze for universities. Moving forward, we want to make post-secondary education a possibility for all New Brunswickers by helping them financially during their time of study, rather than after it.”

Landry said she is committed to continuing to engage students and other stakeholders to find the best ways to strengthen the province’s post-secondary education system.

“To the 28,000 students at our university and college campuses across the province, I hope you have a productive academic year that moves you closer to your goals,” said Landry. “I know you are eager to acquire the knowledge and skills you will need to take your place in our workforce. As a government, we need to support an environment that ensures your future job and career prospects are ready for you in New Brunswick.”

In addition to the on-going One-Job Pledge program which helps post-secondary graduates gain employment in their field of study, Landry noted the success of the Youth Employment Fund, which has helped more than 900 young people gain employment experience since it began in April.

“Our government is focused on dealing with the immediate fiscal challenges, but we are also aware that investments in our future are necessary to maintain balance and growth,” said Landry. “Through ongoing discussions, we can find the best solutions to offer our students affordable, stable, accessible and high-quality post-secondary education while creating jobs in the province.”
