FREDERICTON (GNB) – The 2016-17 student financial assistance applications are now available.

The applications are for New Brunswick residents who will be attending a post-secondary educational institution full-time in programs that start on or after Aug. 1.

The information guide, along with the online application and other forms, are posted on the Student Financial Services website.

This year, student financial assistance applicants will also be automatically assessed for Tuition Access Bursary eligibility. The bursary provides free tuition to New Brunswick students with a demonstrated financial need, who have an annual household income of $60,000 or less, and are enrolled in an undergraduate degree, diploma or certificate program at a publicly funded university or college in New Brunswick.

“Our government believes that a solid education is the key to a strong and vibrant economy,” said Post-secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Donald Arseneault. “We recently launched the first phase of the program to increase access for those who may otherwise not have considered post-secondary education, reduce debt, curb youth outmigration, help address declining enrolment, and provide an incentive for New Brunswick youth to stay and study in New Brunswick.”

Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible, even if they have not been officially accepted into a program of study. Applications must be received at least eight weeks before the start date of a program in order for students to receive funding by the time classes begin.

“Over the coming months we will also look at ways we can build on the base of the program that is in place for the 2016-17 academic year and how it complements a suite of other student aid programs available,” said Arseneault. “I encourage students, parents and others interested in obtaining a post-secondary education to contact the department for more information on what is available to help them achieve their higher education goals.”
