SHIPPAGAN (GNB) – The provincial and federal governments are investing more than $11 million for a co-location project at Campus de la Péninsule acadienne of the Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick (CCNB) and at the Shippagan campus of the Université de Moncton.

“Our government understands that the economy and education are priorities,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “We are proud to partner with the Trudeau government to get things done in the areas that matter most to New Brunswickers.”

The provincial government will invest $6.37 million and the federal government will invest $5.01 million to add 2,610 sq. metres (29,000 sq. feet) to the Irène-Léger pavilion under the Strategic Investment Fund. The new space will be shared by both the college and the university and will include a communal cafeteria, offices for student services as well as new space for classrooms, laboratories and college offices.

“These infrastructure investments will create good, well-paying jobs that can help the middle class grow and prosper today, while also delivering sustained economic growth for years to come,” said Acadie-Bathurst MP Serge Cormier. “Through the Strategic Investment Fund, we are strengthening the foundation for building Canada into a global center for innovation.”

Cormier attended the event for Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains.

Through the fund, the federal government will provide $49.3 million, the provincial government will invest $35.2 million, and universities will contribute $14.1 million, in several projects, which will result in a total of $98.6 million being spent on university and college infrastructure in New Brunswick. It is expected that additional investments will bring the total amount received by colleges and universities to $111 million.

"This infrastructure project fulfils our co-location plan with the CCNB, designed for optimal sharing of services and resources between the two institutions,” said university president and vice-chancellor Raymond Théberge. “It enhances the quality of the student experience and provides the student population and staff on the Shippagan campus and the CCNB with a better living and working space.”

"Today's announcement is welcome news as it brings to fruition the long-expected sharing of facilities, a project which the students and community have been anticipating for several years," said the president and CEO of CCNB, Liane Roy. "The Acadian Peninsula campus is well-established in the region. This project confirms the need to broaden the range of services we offer to the population of the Acadian Peninsula."
