FREDERICTON (GNB) – Libraries across the province will be celebrating the inaugural New Brunswick Public Libraries Month in October. The theme is Cultivate Your Imagination.

“Libraries are where our communities come together as readers, information seekers and engaged citizens,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Donald Arseneault. “Our public libraries play a vital role in building our communities, establishing connections and providing our residents with valuable resources around education, literacy and learning.”

The month will be an opportunity to raise awareness of the role that public libraries play as indispensable community hubs which provide access to a variety of resources, promote literacy and foster innovation.

“This year’s theme conjures up imagery of libraries as fields ripe with knowledge and ideas that are ready to be harvested,” said Sylvie Nadeau, executive director of the New Brunswick Public Library Service. “This theme speaks to the value of public libraries as safe environments where people of all ages can come to broaden their horizons, stimulate their creativity and have fun.”

The service comprises one provincial office, five regional offices, 52 public libraries, 11 public-school libraries, a virtual branch and a provincial library services by mail branch.

“Our public libraries play a significant role in fostering a culture of literacy and lifelong learning,” said Finance Minister Cathy Rogers, who is also minister responsible for literacy. “It is wonderful to have this opportunity to celebrate our public libraries, which add so much to our communities and our province.”
