FREDERICTON (GNB) – New Brunswickers can plan their Family Day outings by visiting a special page on the provincial government website. The official Family Day website, www.gnb.ca/familyday, includes the full calendar of events happening in communities across the province.
“Family Day gives us an opportunity to experience the activities that make New Brunswick a four-season tourism destination,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister John Ames. “Communities across the province are celebrating Family Day with physical activities like skating, skiing and snowmobiling, and cultural activities like museum and gallery visits.”
There are more than 70 activities, aimed at all ages and interests, taking place providewide. Many organizations are providing free admission, including:
- Beaverbrook Art Gallery;
- family programming at the Fredericton and Moncton YMCAs;
- Family Day activities at the Northern Carleton Civic Centre in Florenceville-Bristol; and
- public skating and swimming at the Garcelon Civic Centre in St. Stephen.
On Saturday, Feb. 17, Mount Carleton Provincial Park will preview Family Day with a variety of outdoor adventures. Dog sledding, ice fishing and guided cross-country skiing and snowshoeing excursions are planned. New Brunswickers are encouraged to document their Family Day experiences and share photos and videos on social media with the hashtag #FamilyDayNB.
This year will mark the first time that New Brunswick has had a paid February holiday. The day puts New Brunswick in line with eight other Canadian jurisdictions that observe a paid holiday in February, and brings the province up to the national average of eight paid public holidays per year.
“In our busy modern lives, it is important to make time for work-life balance,” said Labour, Employment and Population Growth Minister Gilles LePage. “Family Day will give New Brunswick families an opportunity to spend time celebrating the season together.”
