FREDERICTON (GNB) – Young readers are encouraged to register for the 2018 Summer Reading Club, being held at New Brunswick’s public libraries in June, July and August. This year’s theme is Jobs and Professions, and the slogan is I Will Be What I Read.

“The Summer Reading Club encourages reading as a lifelong habit,” said Labour, Employment and Population Growth Minister Gilles LePage. “It is great to see children so eager to explore and learn through reading. Improving literacy rates is crucial for the provincial economy. The ability to read helps New Brunwickers reach their full potential, achieve goals, and take advantage of opportunities.”

Registration is now open at all public libraries. Visit or call your local public library to learn more or to sign up.

Each year since 1991, children of all ages have been invited to join the Summer Reading Club. The free program encourages reading during the summer school break and promotes literacy.

Last year, 11,708 club participants read 303,394 books, magazines or websites. This included 16 children who registered through library services by mail, a service offered to patrons who are unable to visit the library.

“Your government’s vision is that all New Brunswickers have the literacy and essential skills they need to participate fully at school, work, home and in their communities,” said Finance Minister Cathy Rogers, who is also the minister responsible for literacy. “Libraries play a key role in creating lifelong learning environments and promoting literacy through outreach and programming. The Summer Reading Club is a great example of this.”
