FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement was issued today by Premier Blaine Higgs regarding the municipal election results released on Tuesday, May 25:

I congratulate the winning candidates of New Brunswick’s municipal elections and welcome them to their positions. I also congratulate all those who have been elected to serve as part of a regional health authority board or district education council.

Candidates faced numerous challenges in participating in this election because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and I thank everyone for their patience and for taking care to follow public health rules throughout their campaigns.

Aside from the pandemic, the results show that this was a notable election thanks to the many female candidates who both ran for office and won. In fact, 80 more women ran for council positions across the province than in the previous municipal election.

I commend everyone who chose to run for a position, regardless of the outcome. Running a campaign takes a lot of time and hard work, and I thank you for giving back to your community by running for office.

I would also like to recognize everyone at Elections New Brunswick for working through these challenging circumstances. Throughout the election period, they kept voters and candidates well informed of changes in the process, and they ensured the elections were safe and fair for everyone involved.

Thanks to their guidance and hard work, voting options were provided to people in isolation, residents impacted by a recent lockdown had the opportunity to vote on a delayed election date, and the public had access to a livestream video feed of election results to ensure the process was fair and transparent.

Finally, I thank the New Brunswickers who took the time to vote. Casting your ballot may have been a different experience than usual this year, but it’s just as important that we participate in the electoral process. Voting is our opportunity to make a difference in our province and ensure we are represented by strong community leaders.

I look forward to collaborating with both the new officials who were elected yesterday as well as candidates who were re-elected as we work together to create vibrant and sustainable communities across New Brunswick.
