Procedure to follow to obtain a wiring permit associated with an electrical plan

The Chief Electrical Inspector may suspend an electrical contractor’s licence if he/she has started an electrical installation requiring a plan without first obtaining a wiring permit.

All electrical plans with the following ratings are required to be stamped by a Professional Electrical Engineer who is registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick (APEGNB) and who is
acceptable to the Chief Electrical Inspector:

a) greater than 600 amperes for a 120/240 volts single phase;
b) greater than 400 amperes for a 120/208 volts three phase;
c) greater than 400 amperes for a 347/600 volts three phase; or
d) greater than 347/600 volts.

Electrical plans must be registered by an inspector before the wiring permit application can be processed by Service New Brunswick.

1. Call any local inspector in your area for an appointment (1-888-659-3222)
2. The inspector will schedule a date to register the plan and provide you with a registration number
3. Submit the wiring permit application (not the plan) and building permit or waiver to SNB for processing
4. The permit will be issued by SNB upon receipt of the wiring permit fee plus the plan registration fee of $100
5. The electrical installation work can begin
6. Inform the inspection department of any changes to the electrical plan

All electrical plans provided to the inspector must include:

1. one copy of the plan to be retained by the inspector,
2. one copy of the plan to be retained by the Electrical Contractor,
3. one optional copy of plan for archival purposes,
4. the minimum design information on the plan prescribed by bulletin 165-17,
5. the engineer’s commitment form (provided by the engineer),
6. the wiring permit application,
7. a copy of the building permit or waiver if available, and
8. when applicable, a
   

a. federal land, First Nations or other jurisdictional letter of consent,
b. special permission from the Chief Electrical Inspector if more than one service is on the building, and
c. postponement or deviation letter form the Chief Electrical Inspector if deviating from the code
