PETITCODIAC (CNB) – The Petitcodiac Arena was officially opened today following a $750,000 renovation.

"Ensuring our regions have recreational infrastructure is important as we encourage our residents to become more physically active," said Petiticodiac MLA Sherry Wilson. "The provincial government is proud to have played a major part in this important recreational infrastructure project."

Wilson spoke on behalf of Economic Development Minister Paul Robichaud.

"As Canada emerges from the global recession, our government is proud of the investments we have made, through Canada's Economic Action Plan, in community infrastructure projects that have supported employment and contributed to local economic activity at a difficult time," said Rob Moore, minister of state (small business and tourism). "The improvements to the Petitcodiac Arena ensure that local residents will continue to have access to an important community recreational facility for years to come."

The project enabled the village to redo the entire ice surface with new pipes, carry-out structural work under the floor involving underground ties, and add new boards to the arena, which was built in 1974.

"On behalf of the Village of Petitcodiac, I would like to say how pleased we are to have worked in partnership with both the federal and provincial governments to complete this project," said Petitcodiac Mayor Peter Saunders. "The arena is enjoyed by our youth and seniors alike, as well as by many citizens from the surrounding area. The arena upgrade ensures we can continue to provide a safe and healthy recreational facility for all to enjoy."

The federal government invested $250,000 through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program, a key economic stimulus initiative under Canada's Economic Action Plan. The provincial government contributed $250,000 through the Regional Development Corporation; while the Village of Petitcodiac provided the remaining $250,000.
