SUSSEX (CNB) - The federal and provincial governments today announced $2 million in additional funding to allow Sussex to move forward with the Fundy Civic Centre project. This support will cover the increased costs associated with the project originally announced in July, 2007.

"The civic centre has been a long-time goal of many people here in Sussex and will provide needed community space and athletic facilities that will make an already great community an even better place to live and work," said Natural Resources Minister Bruce Northrup. "This centre will give our young people and our seniors an all-weather, year-round facility in which to swim, run, play, learn and develop. It will be a great addition to our community.''

Northrup spoke on behalf of Economic Development Minister Paul Robichaud.

"The Government of Canada, in collaboration with the Province of New Brunswick, is proud to support the construction of the Fundy Civic Centre," said Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism) Rob Moore. "Our government continues to work with communities and organizations across New Brunswick to support initiatives that diversify the economy, create jobs and improve the quality of life of residents."

Moore spoke on behalf of National Revenue Minister Keith Ashfield, who is also minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and minister for the Atlantic Gateway.

The Fundy Civic Centre will offer community meeting and spectator space, an indoor aquatic facility and a fitness centre, including a walking track.

In 2007, the federal, provincial and municipal governments each announced $1.3 million investments to support the project. An additional $300,000 was provided by the Regional Development Corporation. Contributions from Sussex Corner, Norton and the surrounding local service districts as well as a successful fundraising campaign are also contributing to the realization of the project.

"The funding support will ensure that this notable centre will be completed," said Sussex Mayor Ralph Carr.
