SAINT JOHN (CNB) – Residents of Saint John joined federal and provincial government representatives and community agencies today to mark the official opening of the Flemming Court Splash Pad Park.

"As we celebrate the official opening of this new recreational facility, the provincial government is proud to have played a major part in this important community project," said Wellness, Culture and Sport Minister Trevor Holder, who is also minister of tourism. "We must ensure our regions have recreational infrastructure as we encourage our residents to become more physically active."

Holder spoke on behalf of Economic Development Minister Paul Robichaud.

"Our government's support for the development of the Flemming Court splash pad in turn supports the families who make their home here and who are building their futures in Saint John," said Saint John MP Rodney Weston. "We are proud to invest in projects that give access to safe recreational infrastructure as well as ensure vitality and growth in our community. This kind of project adds to the quality of life and local community spirit that helps to define the places where we live."

This project includes the revitalization of the park space and the construction of Flemming Court splash pad.

"Flemming Court Park started as a dream of the teens in Crescent Valley who wanted a safe, fun place for children to play," said Ann Barrett, chair of the Flemming Court Park Committee. "We are very pleased to see Phase 1, the Splash Pad completed. The Crescent Valley Resource Centre is committed to getting the park fully completed with its next two phases of play equipment and landscaping."

Under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program, an economic stimulus initiative under Canada's Economic Action Plan, the federal government has invested $200,000 in the project. The provincial government, through the Regional Development Corporation, contributed $200,000, and the City of Saint John provided $130,000.
