EDMUNDSTON (CNB) – Provincial, federal and municipal government representatives today confirmed their continued support for the new Edmundston multi-sport pavilion. At the same time, the provincial government announced an additional contribution of $2 million.

"Empowering New Brunswickers to live more actively is vital to growing healthier communities and a stronger province," said Economic Development Minister Paul Robichaud. "Our government's participation in the construction of the multi-sport pavilion is an investment in this region's wellness, now and in the future."

The pavilion, which will replace an aging sport bubble, will be built near the future campus of the Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick, Edmundston campus; the Université de Moncton, Edmundston campus; and the Cité des Jeunes A.-M.-Sormany high school. It will be used for sports such as track and field, tennis, basketball, badminton, volleyball, judo, soccer and walking.

"Families, students, businesses and organization in Edmundston and Madawaska will all benefit from the new multi-sport pavilion," said Bernard Valcourt, minister of state for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and la Francophonie. "Our investment in the development of the pavilion is an investment in importance of quality recreational infrastructure to the vitality of this community and its long-term development. This project will support local jobs during its construction and contribute to the local economy for years to come."

The federal government, through ACOA, has contributed $1 million under the Recreation Infrastructure Canada Fund.

"We are thankful for the ongoing support of the governments of New Brunswick and Canada toward the construction of this important infrastructure, which will benefit our entire community,” said Edmundston Mayor Jacques P. Martin. “Investing in this project is the City of Edmundston's contribution toward the development of our youth and our educational institutions."
