MONCTON (GNB) – The provincial and federal governments are helping the City of Moncton replace its fleet of buses.

“The provincial government’s investments in public infrastructure renewal projects such as the Codiac Transpo project will help boost our economy and create jobs,” said Moncton East MLA Monique LeBlanc. “This project will improve access to public transit for people with disabilities and assist in attracting new users.”

LeBlanc attended the announcement for Health Minister Victor Boudreau, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

“Our government’s support for public infrastructure has never been stronger,” said Moncton–Riverview–Dieppe MP Robert Goguen. “We are pleased to work with the Government of New Brunswick to approve important projects like the City of Moncton’s Transit Fleet Replacement project through the New Building Canada Fund. This program is helping to ensure infrastructure funding continues to flow in New Brunswick as we focus on creating jobs, promoting growth, and building strong, prosperous communities across Canada.”

Goguen attended the announcement for federal Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs Denis Lebel.

The project entails purchasing 11, forty-foot, heavy-duty transit buses to replace aging vehicles. The new buses are fully accessible and include up-to-date safety features such as impact plates to protect against accidents, single windshields with no blind spots, and larger ramp platforms for wheelchairs.

These vehicles will improve the reliability of the bus fleet in the Moncton area and significantly improve access to public transit for people with disabilities.

“This investment enables Codiac Transpo to renew its aging fleet and improve the reliability of our service,” said Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc. “Our residents will now have access to modern buses, and we will provide enhanced service to people with disabilities. We are thankful for the investment from both levels of government and look forward to continuing our partnership on other important infrastructure projects.”

The provincial government will invest $1,825,443 towards the project and Moncton will contribute $912,721.

The federal government has selected this project for funding consideration of up to half of the total eligible project cost of $5,476,329, to a maximum of $2,738,164, under the New Building Canada Fund’s Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component—National and Regional Projects. This funding is conditional on the project meeting applicable federal eligibility requirements with respect to the New Building Canada Fund and the signing of a contribution agreement.

The New Building Canada Plan is providing $53 billion to support provincial, territorial and municipal infrastructure between 2014 and 2024.

Over this ten-year period, New Brunswick will benefit from about $866 million in dedicated federal funding, including almost $394 million under the New Building Canada Fund.
