NEGUAC (GNB) – The Neguac Sportplex Arena will be improved thanks to funding from the provincial, federal and municipal governments.

“This project brings all three levels of government together to invest in strategic infrastructure, create jobs and provide local residents and visitors with an even better facility for recreational activities,” said Miramichi Bay-Neguac MLA Lisa Harris. “These upgrades provide new infrastructure for sports and recreation in the community, while enhancing the quality of life for families and youth.”

Harris attended the event for Health Minister Victor Boudreau, who is also the minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

The provincial government and the Village of Neguac are each investing $34,999 to improve the arena. The federal government has approved a contribution of $35,199 through its Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

“The 150th anniversary of Confederation is a time to celebrate the places across this country that unite and connect us – the parks, the trails, the cultural and community centres and more,” said Miramichi MP Tilly O’Neill Gordon. “The Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program will have a lasting impact in Atlantic Canada and will ensure residents, such as those here in Neguac, have access to improved community spaces.”

O'Neill Gordon attended the event for Rob Moore, minister of state for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

Improvements to the Sportplex involve updates to the shower rooms, the installation of new water pumps, renovations to various areas of the building including painting, replacing original lighting with energy efficient LEDs, new doors and linking the facility to the municipal septic system.

“The users of the Sportplex Arena will benefit from major renovations at the arena, which will be more functional and welcoming and will encourage residents from the region to come and practice a sport to help them stay healthy longer,” said Neguac Mayor Georges R. Savoie.
