SAINT JOHN (GNB) – The new Saint John Regional YMCA officially opened on Saturday, Oct. 24.

“The provincial government is proud to have invested in this important recreational infrastructure project for Saint John and its region,” said Ed Doherty, minister responsible for Service New Brunswick. “This project created jobs and will support the health and well-being of families for years to come.”

Doherty attended on behalf of Health Minister Victor Boudreau, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

The 6,300 sq. metre (70,000 sq. foot) building on Churchill Boulevard includes recreational spaces, a multi-purpose space, meeting and instructional rooms.

“We have seen a wonderful mix of seniors, families, children and adults feeling happy, healthy and connected to the community at the new regional Y,” said Shilo Boucher, president and chief executive officer of the YMCA of Greater Saint John. “Many volunteers have supported the move and provided tours to showcase the facility. We have hired more than 60 additional staff and the hiring process continues.”

The YMCA is a non-profit charitable organization that has been serving the community since 1854. Providing wellness, education and social services in an integrated manner, it contributes to the mix of public, private and charitable programs and facilities available to residents in Saint John and the surrounding area.

In December 2013, the provincial government invested $4.3 million in the project. The YMCA of Greater Saint John contributed more than $11.7 million.
