EDMUNDSTON (GNB) – The sod-turning and naming ceremony of Edmundston’s new community amphitheatre, to be known as the Jean-Daigle Centre, took place today, marking the beginning of construction on the $21 million facility.

“We know how important economic growth and job creation is to New Brunswickers,” said Economic Development Minister Francine Landry. “We are getting things done with investments like this which will spur economic growth and create jobs right here in the northwest.”

Landry spoke on behalf of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Donald Arseneault, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

Once complete, the 8,482-sq. metre (91,299-sq. foot) amphitheatre will have permanent seating for 2,400 and space to accommodate an additional 1,300 people.

“It is a pleasure to take part in milestone events like this one that give us the opportunity to witness the progress of projects as they take shape in our region,” said Madawaska-Restigouche MP René Arseneault. “This is a perfect example of what can be accomplished when community leaders work in partnership with governments on strategic projects to help build strong, sustainable communities and contribute to the quality of life of the families who live here.”

He attended the event for federal Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains, who is minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

The Jean-Daigle Centre will enhance Edmundston’s ability to host major events such as trade shows, festivals and cultural and sporting events.

“This project is the outcome of sustained efforts by an entire community and dedicated leaders,” said Edmundston Mayor Cyrille Simard. “The Centre Jean-Daigle, Amphithéâtre communautaire d’Edmundston, is named after a man who gave wings to the fundraising campaign by offering a major donation. He has always had the project at heart and deserves full recognition. Thanks must also be given to all the collaborators, donors and the many volunteers who have been involved for several years.”

The provincial government announced in July 2015 a $7 million forgivable loan for construction of the amphitheatre.
