MIRAMICHI (GNB) – The provincial government is investing $150,000 in the creation of murals and two stylized wooden backdrops, for the Miramichi’s downtown areas, in commemoration of Canada’s 150th anniversary.

“New Brunswickers are proud of who they are and where they come from,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Bill Fraser. “Our investment in these murals and backdrops will enrich the downtown Miramichi areas while celebrating the birth of our nation.”

Fraser spoke on behalf of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Donald Arseneault, who is also the minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

There will be four artistic murals placed around the downtown, including one on the side of Mill Cove Coffee on Newcastle Boulevard. The wooden backdrops, suitable for selfies, are each about 20 feet long with a red stylized “150” and will be located at Ritchie Wharf Park and at Waterford Green Park. The funding will also pay for facade improvements in the downtown.

"We are incredibly excited about our Canada 150 projects that will beautify our downtown, infuse arts and culture into our cores, enhance the waterfront experience, boost tourism traffic and economic development, create shareable social media moments in Miramichi, and increase community pride just in time for Canada's 150,” said Miramichi Mayor Adam Lordon. “Our downtowns will be even more welcoming and vibrant and we thank the provincial government for making this possible.”

Funding is being provided under the Program for Municipal Development to Commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary. Municipalities with populations of more than 4,000 and less than 25,000 were eligible to apply for funding of up to $150,000 for beautification projects to contribute to a vibrant and attractive downtown and to commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary.
