BATHURST (GNB) – An investment of $150,000 is being made towards the development of a downtown park in Bathurst in commemoration of Canada’s 150th anniversary.

“We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful province of breathtaking landscapes, where we rejoice in its cultural diversity and welcoming spirit,” said Justice and Public Safety Minister Denis Landry. “Our investment in this project will enrich Bathurst’s downtown while marking our nation’s 150th anniversary.”

Landry spoke on behalf of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Donald Arseneault, who is also the minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

Education and Early Childhood Development Minster Brian Kenny and Bathurst Mayor Paolo Fongemie, participated in the announcement.

The park will feature a central monument with a maple leaf sculpted on all four sides, plus a sidewalk with 150 blocks, each including text recounting specific events in the history of the country, province or city.

“We are grateful for this investment on behalf of the Government of New Brunswick,” said Fongemie. “This will allow us to create an outdoor infrastructure celebrating 150 years of our history and heritage, as well as offering a community and tourist gathering space in our downtown area.”

Funding is being provided under the Program for Municipal Development to Commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary. Last January, municipalities with populations of more than 4,000 and less than 25,000 were eligible to apply for funding of up to $150,000 for beautification projects to contribute to a vibrant and attractive downtown and to commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary.
