SAINT JOHN (GNB) – The provincial and federal governments are investing a combined $50,881 in upgrades to the Lorneville Community and Recreation Centre in Saint John.

“Our investment in important recreational infrastructure projects such as the Lorneville Community and Recreation Centre will help improve the quality of life of local residents for many years to come,” said Energy and Resource Development Minister Rick Doucet.

Doucet spoke on behalf of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser, who is also the minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

“Community-based organizations, such as the Lorneville Community and Recreation Centre, make an incredible difference in the lives of Saint John-Rothesay residents,” said Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long. “Today’s young people will shape the Canada of the next 50 years. We want to give youth the support necessary to reach their full potential in the community.”

Long attended for federal Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains, who is also the minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

The provincial government is investing $25,300 through the Family and Youth Capital Assistance Program while the federal government is contributing $25,581 through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

“What began as a small group discussing ways to better the existing playground for our community youth has led to this exciting outcome,” said Dayna Martin, a volunteer with the Lorneville Playground Restoration Group. “This would not have been possible without the amazing support from the Lorneville community, local businesses, the City of Saint John, ACOA and the Regional Development Corporation.”

The project includes upgrades to the centre’s playground, as well as the building’s insulation and door.
