CAMPOBELLO ISLAND (GNB) – The provincial and federal governments are contributing almost $843,000 to the Friars Bay Development Association for infrastructure improvements to the Welshpool wharf on Campobello Island.

“Increased tourism and investing in infrastructure lead to more jobs and a stronger economy, which will benefit all New Brunswickers,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister John Ames. “We are pleased to be a partner with the federal government in this important infrastructure investment for the Welshpool wharf.”

Ames spoke on behalf of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser, who is also the minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

The investment is part of Phase 2 of the Welshpool Landing project. Phase 1, which was completed in December 2016, included upgrades to the main floor of Welshpool Hall, the installation of interior floats and a gangway for the wharf, and electrical service upgrades. These improvements are aimed at helping the community capitalize on economic opportunities related to tourism and aquaculture.

“The Government of Canada knows that investing in infrastructure helps communities thrive and creates good, well-paying jobs that help the middle class grow and prosper,” said New Brunswick Southwest MP Karen Ludwig. “These infrastructure improvements will enhance community events and promote an increase in tourism opportunities, all of which represent important steps toward strengthening the local economy, supporting quality of life, and promoting growth and prosperity in this region.”

Ludwig attended for federal Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains, who is also the minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

The provincial government is investing $444,816 through the Regional Development Corporation while the federal government is contributing $397,995 through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund.

“Welshpool Landing promises to increase marine and vehicle tourism traffic for the entire Quoddy region,” said Joseph Gough, president of the Friars Bay Development Association. “The association is grateful for the far-sighted support from area residents, businesses and the federal and provincial governments.”
