FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial and federal governments announced $600,000 in funding to help Shediac Bay Yacht Club Ltd. rebuild its water infrastructure to meet current needs and prepare for the future.

“Investing in infrastructure projects like this is part of our government’s priority to build vibrant and sustainable communities in rural New Brunswick,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Gary Crossman, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “This facility is important to the local tourism industry and will help contribute to the province’s overall economic recovery now that it is completed.”

The investment supported the yacht club in revamping infrastructure with the main focus areas being the anchoring and dock systems, the marina layout, and breakwater. The project will help ensure the long-term sustainability of the facility and promote greater tourism-related economic benefits for the region.

“We are focused on diversifying and enhancing the economies of Atlantic communities by investing in projects like this to enhance Shediac Bay’s capacity to overcome economic development challenges and take advantage of the community’s many strengths, assets and opportunities,” said federal Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc.

LeBlanc spoke on behalf of federal Economic Development and Official Languages Minister and minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), Mélanie Joly.

The provincial government contributed $300,000 toward the project through the Regional Development Corporation and the federal government is contributing $300,000 through ACOA.

“As a not-for-profit organization, we do not necessarily have all the resources to complete such a huge rebuild project in a very short time frame. Board members and management worked tirelessly for the past two years to make this a reality, and without this funding, it would have been almost impossible to rebuild,” said Commodore Hughes Arseneau of the Shediac Bay Yacht Club. “We now have a state-of-the-art marina to accommodate 200 boats of all sizes, with improved infrastructure like 50 amp electrical and Wi-Fi. The marina certainly has a very positive economic impact on the local tourism industry.”
