FREDERICTON (CNB) – Ten new members were received into the Order of New Brunswick today at a ceremony presided over by chancellor of the order, Lt.-Gov. Graydon Nicholas.

"I am honoured and proud to be recognizing these outstanding New Brunswickers," said Nicholas. "Their achievements are remarkable, their generosity is immeasurable and they serve as inspirations to us all."

Premier David Alward was also on hand for the investiture ceremony.

"The recipients of the Order of New Brunswick are people who have demonstrated excellence,” said Alward. “They are people who represent the very best of New Brunswick. They serve to show the rest of Canada and the world just what our people can and do achieve."

The recipients of the Order of New Brunswick for 2010 are:

●    Dawn Arnold, the lead organizer of the Northrop Frye International Literary Festival held in Moncton each year;
●    Wayne Brown, a leader who has worked to improve the social and economic condition of his community, the St. Mary's First Nation;
●    Pamela Coates, an activist who has campaigned on behalf of Canadians living in poverty for more than two decades;
●    Reuben Cohen, a former Dalhousie University chancellor and a philanthropist who has supported education, arts and community endeavours in his native Moncton and throughout Atlantic Canada;
●    Evérard Daigle, who has served the Grand Falls community since the early 1950s as a school-board trustee, chamber of commerce president, mayor and MLA;
●    Gérard Haché of Saint-Isidore, a volunteer for numerous social and economic causes, particularly in education and health;
●    Gerard Losier, a health care and community activist, philanthropist and physician;
●    Susan Rickards, a writer, teacher, social justice activist, who was most recently involved in the development and adoption of the first New Brunswick poverty reduction plan;
●    Zoël Saulnier, a promoter of Acadian literature and heritage; and
●    Ruth Stanley, an advocate for gender equality, youth, health care and the arts.

The Order of New Brunswick was created to recognize individual New Brunswickers who have demonstrated excellence and achievement in a particular area and who have made outstanding contributions to the social, cultural or economic well-being of the province.

"Because it is the highest honour our province can confer, the Order of New Brunswick holds great significance to the people of our province and especially for its inductees and their families,” said Alward.

The recipients were presented with a full-size medal depicting the provincial floral emblem and the shield of arms as well as a special ribbon with the colours of the shield. Members of the order are entitled to use the initials O.N.B. after their names.
