FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has released a request for proposals for the first round of specialized care beds to be created for seniors with Alzheimer's disease or dementia. The deadline is Friday, July 6.

The request for proposals is part of the provincial government’s 2011-16 nursing home renovation and replacement plan. During the next five years, 704 specialized care beds will be created.

"The demographic review conducted as part of the renovation and replacement plan showed an increasing need for these types of beds and services," said Social Development Minister Sue Stultz, who is also minister responsible for seniors, housing and community non-profit organizations. "The creation of these beds will ensure that we meet the overall growing needs of our seniors with Alzheimer's disease or dementia and enhance our seniors' quality of life."

Specialized care bed homes will provide enhanced services to seniors who have a diagnosis of dementia and require Level 3 care. These clients may require assistance with daily activities but do not require ongoing nursing care or supervision.

"Investing in senior care is a key part of rebuilding New Brunswick together," said Stultz. "I look forward to working in partnership with the special care home sector and stakeholders as we work together to reduce waiting lists and transition seniors out of hospitals to provide the proper long-term care they require."

The Department of Social Development will work with the Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick and other stakeholders to develop a training initiative designed for those who will provide direct care for seniors with Alzheimer's disease or dementia.

Proposals from qualified bidders will be evaluated by the geographic location of the proponents. Bed approval will be allocated according to demographics and identified need.
