FREDERICTON (GNB) – The history of the legislative assembly came to life as the new lighting at Parliament Square was turned on in a ceremony on the evening of Wednesday, June 13.
Dale Graham, speaker of the legislative assembly, hosted Lt.-Gov. Graydon Nicholas, Premier David Alward, MLAs and others at the ceremony, held in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee.
The history of the legislative assembly and its historical links to The Monarchy and to the development of government in New Brunswick were highlighted as each of seven lighted areas was unveiled.
"This new display pays fitting tribute to both our Queen and the people's house, which is one of New Brunswick's most important symbols and meeting places," said Alward. "Its historic and architectural significance is now highlighted in a way that honours it as a beacon of democracy, leadership, and service to community."
The project was spearheaded by Walter Brown, who played a key role in this bipartisan effort involving the legislative administration committee. Following the ceremony, Nicholas and Alward presented Brown with a Diamond Jubilee Medal.
"We are pleased to honour Walter Brown with the Diamond Jubilee Medal this evening," Graham said. "Walter was instrumental in seeing this project come to fruition, and the beautiful lighting we are all enjoying is a testament to his tireless work in promoting our provincial heritage."
The enhanced lighting for the buildings and grounds of the legislative assembly is part of the Legislative Assembly Building Long Term Restoration Plan. The lighting was conceived and designed by Guy Simard of Quebec City and installed during the winter and spring of 2012. The project has been overseen by Dan Bussières, the sergeant-at-arms at the legislative assembly.
The lighting emphasizes the many architectural features of the buildings; reduces overall energy consumption; and improves public safety by using environmental-design principles to light previously unlit spaces.
