FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following message was issued by Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé in recognition of National Foster Family Week, Oct. 21 - 27:

This week is an opportunity to recognize and acknowledge the difference foster families make in the lives of children and youth in their care.

Foster families can dramatically alter the lives of children and youth as they provide stability and nurturing at a critical time in a child's life. Helping a child or youth in care can be one of life's most rewarding experiences. The relationships that are formed often last a lifetime.

At any given time in New Brunswick, there are more than 1,100 children in foster care. There is always a need for new foster families. I encourage those who are considering becoming foster families to contact their regional office of Social Development or call 1-800-990-0119.

In honour of National Foster Family Week, I thank all the foster families across New Brunswick who have opened their hearts and homes to a child or youth in care.
