FREDERICTON (GNB) – Eight new units for low-income individuals were officially opened today at 411 St. Mary's St. in Fredericton.

"Adequate, accessible and affordable housing is a significant factor in helping to enhance the quality of life of New Brunswickers and their families," said Human Resources Minister Troy Lifford. "Projects such as this one are good examples of how governments and the community can work together to rebuild New Brunswick."

Lifford was speaking on behalf of Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé.

The development was established by Eric Price and built at a cost of more than $800,000. The project received $160,000 in federal funding to offset construction costs and more than $326,319 in rent supplements from the provincial government for four units.

"The Government of Canada is proud to contribute $160,000 in funding for this project," said Fisheries and Oceans Minister Keith Ashfield. "These new units will provide quality, affordable housing and benefit the economic and social well-being of the entire community."

Ashfield appeared on behalf of Diane Finley, minister of human resources and skills development and minister responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

Funding was made available through Canada's Economic Action Plan. The provincial and federal governments contribute equally to the overall investment of $75 million under the amended Canada-New Brunswick Affordable Housing Program Agreement.

This affordable housing unit was built to high energy-efficiency standards and involved consultation with Efficiency NB. Builders of multi-unit residential buildings can receive technical support from Efficiency NB on how to meet energy efficiency targets.
