FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has proclaimed April as Oral Health Month.

"Oral Health Month is intended to draw attention to the importance of good oral health and the effect that oral health can have on an individual's quality of life and physical, mental and social well-being," said Health Minister Hugh Flemming. "Oral pain, missing teeth or oral infections can influence the way a person speaks, eats and socializes. Oral health problems could also be a sign of something serious such as oral cancer."

In recognition of Oral Health Month, the provincial government and the New Brunswick Dental Society are highlighting their efforts to work together to improve the oral health of children of low-income families through the Healthy Smiles, Clear Vision program.

"Our government is pleased to work with the New Brunswick Dental Society to offer the Healthy Smiles, Clear Vision program for children of low-income families," said Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé. "This program has resulted in children having access to the necessary dental services they need to improve their oral health and prevent future health problems."

The program came into effect September 2012 and covers basic items such as regular exams, X-rays and extractions, with some focus on preventative treatments, to a maximum of $1,000 per year.

Part of the province's poverty reduction strategy, Healthy Smiles, Clear Vision is available to children of low-income families 18 and younger.

"The New Brunswick Dental Society is proud to partner with the Department of Social Development to provide important preventive dental services to young New Brunswickers," said Dr. Don Dempsey, president of the dental society. "The Healthy Smiles, Clear Vision program is a model of improving access to care and establishing good oral health habits early in life to ensure better health for our children."

Application forms may be obtained at Service New Brunswick centres and regional offices of the Department of Social Development. More information about the program and how to apply is online.
