FREDERICTON (GNB) – Twelve new affordable housing units for low-income families and persons with disabilities were officially opened today at 343 Union St. in Fredericton.
"Adequate, accessible and affordable housing is a significant factor in improving the quality of life of New Brunswickers and their families," said Justice Minister Troy Lifford. "Projects such as this one are good examples of how governments and the community can work together to rebuild New Brunswick."
Lifford was speaking on behalf of Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé.
The development is receiving more than $1 million in rent supplements from the provincial government. The federal government is contributing $480,000. Sunnyview Apartments developed the overall project of 24 units.
"Through investments in affordable housing, our government is providing assistance to families and persons with disabilities in New Brunswick and in all corners of the country," said Fredericton MP Keith Ashfield. "We are committed to making communities stronger through projects such as this one."
Ashfield appeared on behalf of Candice Bergen, minister of state (social development).
Funding was made available through the 2011-2014 Investment in Affordable Housing program.
The units were built to high energy-efficiency standards as per the Provincial Green Building Policy.
