FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement was issued today by Social Development Minister Dorothy Shephard, following the release of a decision by Court of Queen’s Bench Chief Justice Tracey DeWare:

Justice DeWare’s decision concurs with the ruling of the Labour and Employment Board with respect to the Essential Services in Nursing Homes Act. The court has also suspended the decision of the Labour and Employment Board until Jan. 2, 2020.

This suspension will provide nursing home residents and their families with peace of mind while the government considers its options.

As we have just received the decision, we will take the time to review it carefully, and decisions on next steps may be made at a later date.

I remain optimistic that the two sides will succeed in reaching a negotiated settlement.
