FREDERICTON (GNB) – Two nursing homes will be built in Moncton and Fredericton, adding 120 beds to the province’s long-term care system within two years.

“With these new facilities, plus other recent nursing home announcements, we are making important progress in implementing the five-year nursing home plan, which aims to create 600 nursing home beds in the coming years to better respond to our aging population,” said Social Development Minister Bruce Fitch.

The two new nursing homes will be built by Shannex, which already operates facilities in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Ontario.

“We are pleased to count on the expertise Shannex brings in developing more high-quality services for New Brunswick seniors,” said Fitch. “This company is well established in our province and is well known for the quality of its facilities and services.”

The Fredericton home will be built on Cliffe Street, next to Shannex’s Neill Hall. The new home in Moncton will be part of the campus currently being built behind the Northwest Plaza between Worthington Avenue and Mountain Road.

The Moncton home is expected to open by November 2023; the Fredericton home is expected to open by April 2024.

There are currently 71 licensed nursing homes across New Brunswick that provide 4,953 beds. The government plans to add 10 licensed nursing homes in the coming years.

The government also plans to increase the hours of care in nursing homes to 3.3 hours per resident in April of this year. This initiative alone represents an increase of $15 million in the annual budget for nursing home services.
