SAINT JOHN (GNB) – The provincial and federal governments are providing $205,000 to non-profit groups in Saint John to help renovate affordable housing units for families and seniors.

“We are pleased to support non-profit organizations in providing housing options for New Brunswickers in need,” said Social Development Minister Bruce Fitch. “These organizations are key partners in our collective effort to develop housing projects in our province.”

“The investment in housing development in all regions of Canada is a priority for our government,” said federal Housing and Diversity and Inclusion Minister Ahmed Hussen, who is also minister responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. “Thanks to the National Housing Co-Investment Fund, our government is supporting non-profit and private organizations to ensure housing units are available across Canada for the benefit of our citizens. This is the National Housing Strategy in action.”

The funding has been allocated as follows under the Canada-New Brunswick bilateral agreement on affordable housing:

• Saint John Non Profit Housing receives $154,944 to provide 21 affordable housing units for families.  
• Sister Sheila Housing Corporation receives $50,000 to provide 10 affordable housing units for seniors.

The Affordable Rental Housing Program provides financial assistance to private entrepreneurs, private non-profit corporations and co-operatives for the construction, repair and conversion of rental housing projects. Assistance is in the form of forgivable loans and is based upon the cost of eligible work and the number of eligible self-contained units or bed units. Information on the program is available online.
