REVISED / Young artists participate in program for 2011 Canada Winter Games (10/04/16)

FREDERICTON (CNB) - Artists aged 16 to 22 are invited to participate in the National Artists Program (NAP) of the 2011 Canada Winter Games.

Wellness, Culture and Sport Minister Hédard Albert announced the program today along with the criteria for the volunteer team manager who will lead the selected artists from this province.

The 2011 Canada Winter Games will be held in Halifax from Feb. 11 to 27.

The NAP is a two-week mentorship and developmental artistic program that is associated with the Canada Games. Each province and territory will send three participants chosen through a jury selection process.

"The NAP is an opportunity for young New Brunswickers to learn more about artistic creativity and athletic performance, and it also gives them the chance to make new friends," said Albert.

Three emerging artists will be selected to be NAP members of Team New Brunswick from the following categories:

  • visual arts, including painting/drawing, sculpture, printmaking, installation, photography, film/videography, and other multi media;
  • dance/movement arts, including dancers of all styles and choreographers;
  • theatre arts, including acting, improvisation, set design, costume design, director, and circus arts;
  • music arts, including performer, conductor, composer; and
  • literary art, including poetry, prose, playwriting, spoken word, storytelling.

Team New Brunswick is also recruiting for the volunteer position of NAP team manager who will be responsible for orienting the province's three young artists to the program and to the team atmosphere. The manager will act as a chaperone to the artists, and stay with them in the Canada Games village.

The criteria for the bilingual position include experience in leading team initiatives, the ability to encourage excellence through the arts, and the ability to assist with artistic production elements. As a member of Team New Brunswick, the NAP team manager's travel expenses, uniform, meals and accommodation are provided.

The deadline to receive applications for the National Artists Program is September 17, 2010. However, young artists are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
