HALIFAX (CNB) – Charles Evans of Fredericton won New Brunswick’s third medal Wednesday as he captured bronze in the 1,000 m race at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax.

Evans managed to pass one skater during the race, but he was unable to catch the others.

“The race went exactly as my coaches and I figured it out,” said Evans following the race. “It is a relief to have won this because I was expecting to do better in the 500 m. That is my best distance, and when I did not win a medal, I figured I had to do better in the 1,000 m, which is my second most favoured distance. I consider that I am in the top five better skaters in Canada, and I was a bit disappointed with my performance the first two days.”

Evans, 18, now joins his brother Andrew with a medal at the games.

“I am happy that we both got one. I also expect we will win another one Thursday in the relay race,” said Evans. “We should finish second.”

Ashley Knockwood, of Dorchester, missed the bronze medal by 3/10 of a point in the women’s air rifle finals. Knockwood was in second place and had a bit of trouble in the 6th round to lose ground.

“I was a bit nervous at the beginning, but I was able to overcome that,” Knockwood said. “I did my best and I am happy. I am just a bit sorry I missed the medal by 3/10 of a point.”

In curling, New Brunswick finished third in its pool and will play for fifth position on Thursday.

Alex Peppard established a provincial record in the 100 m speed skating in a time of 10:80.
