HALIFAX (CNB) – Louis Fortin, of Baie-de-Petit-Pokemouche, lost his shoulder and right arm to cancer 20 years ago. He has never backed down from a challenge since and Monday, he won a silver medal at the para standing competitions in cross country skiing at the 2011 Canada Games, in Halifax.

Fortin covered the 2.5 km distance in a time of 7:46.40, a faster time than he had expected at the trails at the Martock Ski centre.

“My objective was to cover the distance in about 10 minutes,” Fortin said following the medal ceremony. “It is a great feeling to have the silver medal around my neck. The race and course were very technical and I was not used to that. The trail had many hills and 90 degree turns which I am not used to because we have very flat trails in my region. I have only been practising the skiing technique in cross country for the last year and few months. I am very proud of my medal.”

In curling, the men’s team won both its Monday games.

“We needed to win at least one game today (Monday) to qualify for the playoffs,” coach Mike Babin said.“We won both games and that is a bonus. Against Nova Scotia, we let them take the lead, but we did not give up and stayed with the game. We scored two in the 4th and outplayed them the rest of the game.”
