HALIFAX (CNB) – New Brunswick athletes captured four more medals Thursday, including one gold, one silver and two bronze at the 2011 Canada Games in Halifax. New Brunswick has 14 medals in total, two gold, five silver and seven bronze.

Martine Chenhall, of Quispamsis, won gold in the 70-78 kg division while Amélie Saulnier  of Dieppe lost in the final to win the silver medal in the over 78kg division. Miguel Raymond, of Kedgwick, collected the bronze in the 81-90kg class. Kassie Costello, of New Maryland, won bronze in the novice women figure skating division.

“It is awesome to win a gold medal,” Chenhall said following her last bout. “My last fight was much easier than the one before because it was a lot harder to win. I knew I had a chance of winning gold and I went for it. I have been involved in the sport for 10 years.”

“I wanted to win the gold medal, but I hurt my shoulder after she fell on it and it was hurting,” said Saulnier. “I had won my other three fights and my shoulder was ok until she fell on it. I hurt it over a month ago. I have been practising judo for about 16 months.”

“I am a bit disappointed I did not fight for the gold medal,” Raymond said. “I have been involved in the sport for 15 years and I enjoy the feeling of winning fights. I should not have lost my semi-final match, he was bigger than me and I decided to work on his back, but he flipped under me and got me.”

Costello was all smiles following her long program performance in St. Margaret’s.

“I feel great to have won a medal for my province,” she said. “I knew I had a chance for a medal after being second in the short program. I did not feel additional pressure because of that. I just went out to do what I had to do and I did it. I really appreciated the support of the public and Team New Brunswick members in the stands. They really gave me energy and the boost to do well on the ice. I have been skating for 11 years.”

The men’s curling team and skip Scott Babin lost 6-5 to Québec, but New Brunswick finished first anyway.
