SHERBROOKE, Que. (GNB) – Team NB’s women freestyle relay team set a new provincial record in the pool during the second day of competitions at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que.

Jacqueline McDonald (Saint John), Gabriella Belsh (Fredericton), Amanda Greene (Moncton), Cassidy Richards (Fredericton) teamed up together in the pool, setting a new provincial record in the 4 x 200 metre freestyle relay recording a time of 8:58:55, almost three seconds better than the old record. The previous New Brunswick record dates to the Canada Summer Games in Saint John in 1985.

“The girls were excited,” said Marta Belsh, Team NB's head coach, whose daughter was part of the record setting foursome. “Their performance was a good start for the team.”

Belsh said several swimmers set personal best performances in the pool Sunday. On Monday, the swim team returns to the pool in several events.

The men’s basketball squad hit the court for the first time at the Games, defeating Team Alberta 57-54. Dan Luton of Fredericton led the team in scoring with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The basketballers return to action Monday, facing Manitoba.

The 2-0 baseball team plays Nova Scotia on Monday evening.

“It will be a tough game,” said Mark Noel, head coach. “We have been playing as a team these past two games."

The tennis team returns to the court against Newfoundland and Labrador today, after facing a tough Quebec team on Sunday.

Fraser Wells of Rothesay and his sailing squad return to the water at Lac Magog today. Wells sits in second spot in the single-handed laser.

Other teams to see action Monday include softball, volleyball and the team relays in mountain bike.
