SHERBROOKE, Que. (GNB) – Team NB’s basketball and baseball teams head into semi-final action Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que.

The 3-1 men’s basketball team advanced to the semi-final match following a 77-74 win over Saskatchewan. Team NB will play the winner of Wednesday’s night game between Prince Edward Island and Ontario. A semi-final victory Thursday will guarantee the basketballers to Friday’s gold medal game.

“I’ am really happy with the way we are playing,” said John Hickey, head coach of Team NB’s men basketball team. “Regardless if it’s Ontario or Prince Edward Island, I will easily go into that game with the team we have.”

The men’s baseball team plays British Columbia in its semi-final game in nearby Coaticook, Que.,Thursday night. Like the basketball team, a semi-final victory Thursday will guarantee the baseballers a ticket to Friday’s gold medal game. The baseball team defeated Manitoba late Tuesday night 11-10 for the perfect 5-0 record.

Fraser Wells of Rothesay heads into the final day of sailing at Lac Magog sitting in second spot, one point behind a competitor from British Columbia. The rest of the sailing team Simon LeBlanc (Dieppe) and Damien Robichaud (Shediac) 29er, Gina Ford (Moncton) and Valérie Aurore Robichaud (Shediac) 29er and Jill Landry (Rothesay) laser also hit the lake Thursday.

On the mat in wrestling, Team NB starts individual competitions Thursday. The men were squaring off against Alberta, and the women are facing Newfoundland and Labrador in the final rounds of competitions late Wednesday evening. Women’s softball has a consolation round match Thursday.

Team NB returns to the indoor pool Thursday following several key performances. Although Jean-Luc Martin of Dieppe finished 7th in the 100-metre breaststroke in the Final A event, he set a new provincial 15-17 year-old record, breaking his own record by almost one second. Gabriel Boivin (Moncton), Dylan Wooley-Berry (Sackville), Alex Horwood (Fredericton) and Louis Savoie (Dieppe) set a new provincial record in the 4 x 100-metre freestyle, breaking the previous 2001 record.

The team of Cassidy Richards (Fredericton), Jacqueline McDonald (Rothesay), Gabriella Belsh (Fredericton) and Janelle Holt (Saint John) set a new mark of 4:05.92 in the women's 4 x 100-metre freestyle, erasing the old mark of 4:12.47 set in 2001. Richards set a new provincial record in the 100-metre backstroke with a time of 1:05.61. She topped the old mark of 1:05.91 set in 1991. Savoie set a time of 25.69 in the 50-metre butterfly, shaving the old mark of 25.70 set in 1989.
