PRINCE GEORGE, B.C (GNB) – Emily Dean and Delayne Donahue captured New Brunswick’s first medal Monday, striking silver in the women’s team air target event at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C.

“It feels absolutely amazing and it’s an honour and privilege (to win New Brunswick’s first medal)," said Dean, following the competition.

“I knew we had a good chance of getting a medal,” added Donahue.

Donahue and Dean, who both attend St. Stephen High School, combined for a score of 793.3 to win silver, only 5.3 points shy of gold-medal winners Newfoundland and Labrador. Donahue and Dean have Tuesday off before returning to competition in the individual shooting events Wednesday. The men’s target shooting duo of Joshua Bastarache, of Dieppe, and Daniel Knockwood, of Dorchester, placed ninth in the men’s team competition.

The Fredericton curling foursome of Ben MacFarlane, Carter Small, Adam Tracy and Brent Wishart, lost a close match 7-6 to host Team B.C. in the morning draw then lost 10-1 to Team Alberta in the second draw.

The women’s hockey team lost a heartbreaker 5-4 to Team Newfoundland-Labrador in a shootout. Ringette dropped to a 1-2 record, losing 10-7 to Team Ontario.

The short track speed skaters had another great day on the rink with the women’s 3,000 metre relay, setting a new provincial record. Both the men’s and women’s 3,000 metre relay teams advanced to Thursday’s finals.

Rikki Doak, Sarah Gilbert, Heidi Evans, all of Fredericton, Courney Sarault of Moncton and Alyssa Seymour of Baxters Corner all advanced to 1,000 metre heats. Sarault, Evans, Gilbert and Doak also advanced to the 500 metre heats.

Brendan Corey, Roger Fulton, both of Fredericton, Seamus Smith, of Saint Andrews, and Brady Oakes, of Dalhousie, all advanced to the 500 metre heats.

“They (athletes) skated with heart today,” said Derrick MacLeod, Team New Brunswick’s speed skating head coach.

The wheelchair basketball team lost 74-40 to Team Quebec  in its first day of competition.

In other Team New Brunswick news, the long track oval speed skating event is being moved to Fort St. John. The above-zero temperatures forced the Canada Games Host Society to enact its contingency plan to shift the event to the indoor facility there from Prince George’s outdoor oval. Athletes travel to Fort St. John Tuesday with competition to start Wednesday.
