PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – Team New Brunswick garnered three more medals, a gold, a silver and a bronze, at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C.

Para Nordic skier Louis Fortin, of Fredericton, claimed gold in the five kilometer para Nordic freestyle race and Maxime Emond, of Edmundston, won bronze in judo. Miranda Dedam, of Miramichi, finished off Thursday’s medal haul, claiming silver in the Special Olympics single level III figure skating.

“I am very happy," said Fortin. "This is the medal I am most proud of winning out of the three medals.”

Fortin’s performance earned him his third medal of the Canada Winter Games. He struck gold in Tuesday’s 1.2 kilometre para Nordic classic race and silver in the para standing 2.5 kilometre classic event Monday. In 2011, Fortin won two silver medals at the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax. Fortin attended the 2014 Sochi Paralympics where he competed in three para-nordic skiing events.

Team New Brunswick has 13 medals at the Canada Winter Games.

Campbellton’s Lissa Anne McGaghey placed fifth and Lexi McGrath, of Dieppe finished 11th in the women’s singles novice figure skating Thursday.

The women’s curling foursome entered into a late night tiebreaker against Team Quebec and won 9-5. They had a 10-1 win over Team Manitoba in the first tiebreaker. Earlier in the day, Team New Brunswick lost 7-5 to Team Nova Scotia to finish with a 2-3 record, the identical records as Team Quebec and Team Manitoba.

In the 15-kilometre men’s cross-country mass start event, Kevin Heppell, of Charlo, was the top New Brunswicker, finishing 35th followed by Vincent Leclair of Balmoral, 41st,Thierry Dugas of Caraquet, 45th, Alexandre Leclair of Balmoral 47th, and David Lanteigne, of Caraquet, 48th.

Luisa Schwarz, of Fredericton, placed 23rd in the women’s 10 kilometre mass start. Michelle Landry, of Moncton, finished 42nd followed by Juliana Luiker, also of Fredericton 46th, and Harriet Wright, of Fredericton 52nd.

In men’s hockey, New Brunswick went down 6-1 to Alberta and will play for final placing Friday.

Team New Brunswick lost two matches and tied one in squash play.
