WINNIPEG (GNB) – Team New Brunswick won another pair of medals at the Canada Summer Games today.

Veronica Coombes, of Shediac Cape, mined a gold medal performance in the 200-metre race today, making it three gold medals in two days for the para athlete. Coombes struck gold twice Thursday with victories in the 400-metre and 1,500-metre races.

“I feel wonderful,” said Coombes. “I am really happy with all my times here (at the Canada Games).”

Later in the evening, Miramichi’s Laura Dickinson claimed silver in the 5000-metre race, earning her second silver medal of the games.

“Overall, I am really happy with my results,” said Dickinson. “I still have another four years and I can go to the Canada Games again. Next time it will be two golds.”

Today’s performance by Coombes and Dickinson in track and field lifts Team New Brunswick’s medal count to eight: three gold, two silver and three bronze. On Tuesday, Dickinson won silver in the 3000-metre steeplechase while Liam Turgeon, of Tide Head, claimed bronze in the shot put and Christel Robichaud, of Moncton, won bronze in the female para discus. Jacob LeBlanc, of Moncton, won bronze in the men’s para 1,500-metre race.

Today marked the final day of competition for the first week at the games. Weather wreaked havoc on some competitions, cancelling all of today’s sailing races at Lake Winnipeg in Gimli due to a lack of wind. Just a few points shy of a medal, Claire Sears finished in fourth place in the female single-handed laser. Annie Dysart and Lucie Ford placed fourth in the female 29er. Peter Young and Andrew Keyes came seventh. Alyssa Belliveau finished eighth in the 2.4m para mix and John Brittain placed ninth in the male laser.

In rowing, Aiden Best and Daniel Seyffarth placed first in the male double scull consolation final. Lucy Black and Jenn Clarke also placed first in the female double scull consolation final. Caroline Grant, Julie Hill, Stephanie Peglar and Kendra Schmidt came sixth in the female four final at Rabbit Lake in Kenora, Ontario

Triathlon ended today with Team New Brunswick placing 10th in the triathlon mixed relays at Bird Provincial Park.

Athletes who participated in the first week of games return to New Brunswick Saturday morning. Second week athletes arrive in Winnipeg Saturday night before starting full competition Monday.
