NIAGARA (GNB) – Team New Brunswick para-athlete Christel Robichaud won a gold medal in the female para shot put today at the 2022 Canada Summer Games in Niagara.

Robichaud, of Grande-Digue, gives Team New Brunswick 11 medals (two gold, two silver and seven bronze) in the standings at the Games.

Competition commenced today for canoe kayak, athletics, road cycling, men’s softball, men’s lacrosse, and men’s and women’s volleyball. Kyra Hector, of Quispamsis, and Jon Magee, of Rothesay, each finished ninth in their respective women’s and men’s kayak K1 500 m. The New Brunswick kayakers are back on the water in nearby Welland Wednesday. Women’s road cycling time trails in Wainfleet saw Émilie McIntyre, of Memramcook, Laurence Arseneau, of Moncton, and Florence Levesque, of Dieppe, place 21st, 24th and 30th respectively.

In the men’s time trails, Noah Lydon, of Fredericton, Maxime Ouellette, of Grand Falls, Colby Sirois, of Grand Falls, and Pascal LeBlanc, of Notre-Dame-de-Kent, finished 15th, 37th, 38th, and 39th respectively.

Men’s softball lost a pair of games today, losing 16-0 to Saskatchewan and 14-2 to Nova Scotia. Newfoundland and Labrador and Alberta will play Team New Brunswick Wednesday.

Athletics did well at the track with Robichaud’s gold-medal performance and many individuals and teams advancing to finals later this week.

Alberta will face Team New Brunswick’s men and women volleyball teams Wednesday. British Columbia defeated both New Brunswick volleyball teams 3-1 Tuesday night.

After a 37-year absence, men’s box lacrosse returned to the Canada Games today. Team New Brunswick lost a hard-fight battle 5-3 against Manitoba. The men return to action Wednesday with a pair of games against Quebec and Saskatchewan respectively.

The first round of golf competition commences Wednesday at Legends on the Niagara. Sailing and rowing also start competing Wednesday at Niagara-on-the-Lake Sailing Club and Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course respectively. Women’s soccer kicks off their Canada Games schedule against Newfoundland and Labrador in Welland.
