SAINT JOHN (GNB) – Stonehammer Geopark today received provincial funding to continue ongoing park development and to help host an international conference in September.

The park incorporates more than 60 significant geological and fossil locales, including more than 12 publicly-accessible sites.

“Our government is pleased to provide $100,000 in funding to support the continued work of the Stonehammer Geopark,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Trevor Holder. “The park provides a unique experience and an opportunity to learn about geological heritage. Our government believes in its significance as a history and heritage resource, as well as an important attraction for tourists.”

This fall the park is hosting the 6th International UNESCO conference on Global Geoparks.

“We are proud to help cover the costs associated with delivering this prestigious conference, in the amount of $75,000,” said Holder. “We are committed to supporting projects and organizations that enhance our tourism potential as a province, thereby helping us increase visitation to the province and growing our economy.”

The Stonehammer Geopark provides interpretative and educational experiences to visitors and residents.

Stonehammer is a community-supported organization comprised of site owners, tourism operators, members of the community and other stakeholders. The geopark encompasses 2,500 sq.-kilometres in rural and urban areas, and extends from Lepreau Falls to Norton, and from the Fundy Trail to the Kingston Peninsula.
