FREDERICTON (GNB) – New Brunswickers are encouraged to celebrate Heritage Week 2015, Feb. 9-16.

More than 80 community and school events have been planned and organized throughout the province.

The theme for the week is Hope Restored; a concept adopted from New Brunswick’s provincial motto, recognizing the 50th anniversary of both the Canadian and New Brunswick flags.

“Heritage Week is about engaging New Brunswickers in a celebration of who we are, where we are from, and what we value,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Bill Fraser. “In particular, the many school events are a perfect way to reach young people and share our culture and history.”

Fraser and Lt.-Gov. Jocelyne Roy Vienneau will officially launch the week at the Ian Baillie Primary School in Miramichi on Monday, Feb. 9. The opening ceremony will start at 9 a.m. and will include songs, sketches and an exhibition of student projects.

They will also visit the Eel Ground First Nation School and will end their tour at the École Soleil Levant in Richibucto where they will meet Janie Thibodeau, student and creator of the 2015 Heritage Week poster.

Many other community-based activities are also planned and are open to all ages.

“Events like these help us learn from our past and give us hope for our future, Hope Restored, so to speak,” said Fraser. “I invite all New Brunswickers to join the festivities as we collectively reflect on the successes and hard work of our forefathers, learn more about the history of our flags, and embrace our New Brunswick roots.”
