FREDERICTON (GNB) – The City of Edmundston has been chosen to host the province’s official 2017 New Brunswick Day celebrations on Monday, Aug. 7.

“New Brunswickers are proud of who they are and where they come from. We have lots to celebrate here in New Brunswick, such as our beautiful landscapes, our innovative businesses and our wonderful people,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “We encourage New Brunswickers to join us in Edmundston, a dynamic city in the heart of Acadie des terres et forêts.”  

On Canada Day the government will kick-off a seven-week celebration in counties across New Brunswick. In the coming weeks, the government will unveil its initiatives to celebrate Canada 150 this summer.

Edmundston has a vibrant culture and heritage with two provincial historical sites: the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception and the Fortin du Petit-Sault. Known for its historic logging and forest industry, the city is also home to the New Brunswick Botanical Garden and De la République Provincial Park.

“This year’s celebrations in Edmundston will be a wonderful occasion to showcase our beautiful region,” said Economic Development Minister Francine Landry. “We hope that people from across our province and beyond will join us to celebrate New Brunswick.”

New Brunswick Day has been celebrated since 1976. An official host community has been chosen since 1990.

“It is quite an honour for Edmundston to be chosen as the official New Brunswick Day host for 2017, particularly as our country celebrates its 150th anniversary,” said Edmundston Mayor Cyrille Simard. “We can’t wait to start working on the festivities to wow residents and visitors. Edmundston is the place to be this summer!"
