GRAND BAY-WESTFIELD (GNB) – The New Brunswick Day celebrations are starting early this year in recognition of Canada 150. The province will host an early celebration in Grand Bay-Westfield on Saturday, July 8.

“The celebration in Grand Bay-Westfield will provide New Brunswickers with an opportunity to experience our beautiful region,” said Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Rick Doucet. “I encourage people from across our province and beyond to join us in celebrating New Brunswick.”

Doucet spoke on behalf of Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister John Ames.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation and build momentum for New Brunswick Day in Edmundston, the government will kick off a seven-week celebration in counties across New Brunswick on Canada Day. In the coming weeks, the government will unveil the initiatives it has planned to celebrate Canada 150 this summer.

“Grand Bay-Westfield is filled with innovative entrepreneurs and dynamic people,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “It is also a great mix of urban and rural life. For these reasons, Grand Bay-Westfield is an excellent place to kick off our early New Brunswick Day celebrations.”

Located along the St. John River, the Town of Grand Bay-Westfield has an active local business community with access to larger local and regional markets. Grand Bay-Westfield has many parks, walking trails and green spaces, including the Blueberry Hill Nature Preserve.

“During Canada’s 150th year, Grand Bay-Westfield is delighted to host an early New Brunswick Day celebration on July 8”, said Mayor Grace Losier. “Our active community is proud to participate in this special event, and we extend a warm welcome to all to join us in our celebrations.”

New Brunswick Day has been celebrated since 1976. An official host community has been chosen since 1990.
